Glitschka Studios (First Three Paragraphs of a Magazine Article)
A tattooed face. A samurai guppy brandishing a sword. A musician with eight arms and eight different instruments. These are just a few of the creative design solutions that Glitschka Studios has concocted from their ingenious laboratory of design. Principal Von Glitschka’s goatee and glasses match his reputation as one of the industry’s great mad scientists of design. Unlike some creative geniuses, however, this Salem, Oregon-based designer has a solid grasp on the fundamentals...more than 15 years working in the world of corporate and agency design (as a senior designer and art director) taught him how to successfully merge the twin necessities of professionalism and creativity. He’s led Glitschka Studios in their development as one of the Northwest’s premiere design firms, one whose client list spans the nation.
Three years as a Senior Designer for Upper Deck’s Baseball Division gave Glitschka many close contacts with the company, and he still does projects for them. “Since they have a proprietary system for creative production, it’s easy for me to work with them because I understand it inside and out.”
Glitschka has done what every baseball fan and designer dreams about. “I’ve designed insert cards for sets, as well as illustrate for the different pro leagues’ license goods.” The ultimate fringe benefit of working with Upper Deck, says Glitschka, a self-described baseball nut, was being able to handle actual historic memorabilia such as swinging a Babe Ruth bat, putting on Joe DiMaggio’s baseball glove and hat, and viewing never-before-published photos of famous players.
Tulia (Fair Trade Skincare Product Press Release)
Stars Enjoy Exquisite Shea Butter Whip in Pre-Emmy Gift Bags
In a vine-draped terrace, nestled between rare Tahitian pearls and high-end urban denim, Tulia citrus shea butter was Hollywood's newest star at the 2006 Pre-Emmy Style Retreat. The lush skincare product--made from pure, unrefined shea butter and essential oil--was introduced in an extravagant gift bag for Emmy-nominees and Hollywood A-listers.
Stars from Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and Lost were among those lavished with over $70,000 of luxury goods. Each item--from a trip to Bora Bora, couture gowns, an espresso maker, hi-tech gadgets and to the shea butter--was hand-selected for its exclusivity. Festivities were held at the world-famous Frederic Fekkai Salon & Spa on Rodeo Drive. Invitees enjoyed complimentary massages, cuts, manicures and other beauty treatments in preparation for the weekend's Emmy Awards.
While sipping sparkling fruit sodas and nibbling herbed chicken skewers, celebrities chatted with a Tulia representative who explained the product's unique features. Guests admired how the exquisite citrus shea butter deeply moisturizes skin and produces a satin, silky glow. Tulia citrus shea butter fit perfectly with the party's theme of natural beauty, chic pampering and uncommon style.
Photos of the Pre-Emmy Style Retreat are included in this packet. For more snapshots of Tulia mingling with Hollywood stars, visit our website at www.tuliaskincare.com.
BadDesignKills.com: A Revolt Against the Revolting (Press Release for Design Website)
Part prankster, part provocateur, BadDesignKills.com, a new site for professional designers, launched this year on January 12 to cajole an industry invaded by $29.95 hack logos and cheap clipart collections. The incendiary yet humorous poke at poor design has dual motives: to make fun of the ignorance and cut-rate solutions professionals struggle against, and to generate awareness about the nature of good (and bad) design in the public arena.
BadDesignKills.com is a source for guerilla marketing and more. Cool propaganda-type art is available for design professionals to download and display in their sphere of influence. Industry talents such as Paul Howalt (www.howaltdesign.com), Chris Parks (www.updesignbureau.com), Keith Bowman (www.designbureauofamerika.com) and James Strange (www.gretemangroup.com) are among those who contributed free downloadable resources such as stickers and posters. Designers who visit the site are invited to create their own Bad Design Kills propaganda that can be shared with industry professionals globally.

Crumble.Crackle.Burn. (Excerpt from Graphic Design Book. A collaboration with my good friend, Von Glitschka)
The communication arts industry has been invaded. We've been inundated and overrun by computer-driven artwork and design. Vector and bitmap art have taken over--and they're here to stay. It's partly because older technology and methods fell short. Pen, ink, letterpress, brushes, films, screens--they didn't always deliver constancy. There were unexpected blemishes and variations. So now we have software-centric design, producing flawless content. But the digital revolution has its downside.
Frankly, today's artwork and design often looks too clean, too exact. One might even say sterile. Intentional or not, the computer emits precise work. We've become like the modern apple, perfectly red, shiny and smooth...but tasteless. So much of modern digital design seems bred for a perfect mediocrity.
Crumble.Crackle.Burn. (Item Descriptions Accompanying Digital Textures)
Woodn't It Be Nice: Animals no longer call this barn home. It sits in the midst of tall country prairie grass, and like a farmer's weathered face, it speaks wearily of wind, heat and dust.
You Crack Me Up: Time, weather and wear collaborated on this post-modern industrial canvas. Inferior prep work and bad painting never looked so good.
Building Scab: Like a mole on a supermodel's face, this singular and wonderfully obnoxious surface contrasted with the facility's otherwise smooth pavement and pillars.
